My parents always encouraged me to explore my creativity…

Photographer Ravi Mistry talks about his journey through the world of photography.

Tell us about yourself…

I am a photographer, engineer and an educationist. I studied engineering, but my journey into the world of photography began as early as 1996, when my dad gifted me a camera to learn how to capture moments. Photography runs in the family, my dad was a professional videographer and my grandfather was a photographer. Undeniably, passion for the camera came naturally!

Your experiments with the camera…

I got my first digital camera in 1990, that was a CyberShot. I think that’s when I really began experimenting with compositions. In 2006 I got my first SLR, which was very exciting. I fell in love with landscape photography when I travelled to Europe with my family. My professional career as a photographer took off when i was studying in the States. I started shooting for motorcycles and sports cars. Then I moved on to covering Red Bull events. Later I even shot weddings.

From engineering to photography…

I consider myself to be very lucky because my family has always been supportive about my passions. They really care about art and the creative side of a person. For three generations my family has been into the field of education and they have always encouraged me to explore my creativity through photography. They always told me that I was free to pursue any career that I wanted. So the transition from an engineer to a photographer has been smooth.
